Samsung M8800 Pixon, officially launched
On my previous post, I wrote about the rumors of having the Samsung M8800 Pixon here in the Philippines. The long wait is over. Last December 3, Samsung Philippines launched in Metro Manila this 8.0-megapixel full touch camera phone. The phone was launched in The A Venue in Makati City where a lot of people from media, telecommunication companies, cellphone sellers, and bloggers attended.
I thought at first that Samsung M8800 Pixon is just one of those typical camera phones, but it’s not. Everytime Samsung launches a new top of the line product, they always make sure that it outstands all the existing products in the market and the Pixon made this remark into reality.
The Phone’s Features
In the early part of the event, Samsung brought us into a room where we had a live demonstration of Samsung Pixon’s features and functionality. Beyond its normal mobile phone feature, the Pixon’s camera phone application is equipped with 16 scene presets which gives the user more flexibility in adjusting to different lighting and scene conditions. Also, Samsung introduced the music recognition application, which I first encountered with my Sony Ericsson W960i, into this mobile phone (despite the fact that music is not its main functionality).
Geotagging, which I usually do with my N82 GB, is also integrated with Samsung Pixon. Users can now take photos and record the exact coordinates where the photo was taken. They also introduced photo linking and photo tagging. Photo tagging and photo linking is its photo viewer’s feature where you can identify and link a person’s face to his contact information. You can also use photo tagging for a quicker way of searching photos in your device.
Though I’m pretty impressed with the new features Samsung introduced in their new product, I’m still not impressed in the phone’s connectivity feautures. Though the Pixon already supports 3G and HSDPA, it still lacks WLAN capabilities. In a country like the Philippines, users owning mid-range and high-end phones prefer using WiFi as their primary means in connecting to the internet. It’s a shame that a full-touch mobile phone has no wifi capabilities. Good news to those who have unlimited data plan though.
The Verdict
Though it lacks WiFi functionalities, its other features greatly compensates this issue. This 8.0-megapixel camera phone is the thinnest mobile phone of its kind in the market. I also love they way how Samsung seamlessly integrated its proprietary software into this device. Its operating system’s performance (including Samsung’s widget functionality) is relatively faster as compared to that of Samsung’s Omnia which runs on Windows Mobile. Overall, this mobile phone is recommended to those who are looking for a good camera phone or for mobile phones where style and functionality are merged into one.
