How to convert docx to doc and other files
Some people nowadays are using Microsoft Office 2008 in creating their office applications. The utilization of this new version of office applications poses problems regarding compatibility and portability of office documents. If you have noticed, Office 2008 documents contains and extended character at the end of their file types (docx for doc, xlsx for xls, pptx for ppt). All of these new file extensions are not compatible with the previous versions of the Microsoft Office suite. There was even an instance when I forgot to save my document as an office 2003 compatible document. When I transferred to the workstation which uses an older version of Microsoft Office, I have encountered problems in opening my document.
Last night, I was able to find a way to convert office 2008 files to office 2003 compatible files without the use of any office 2008 applications. These conversion tools are online applications, which makes it more robust in terms of portability.
- Docx2Doc is a web service which offers free conversion of docx documents to doc format. http://www.docx2doc.com/
- Zamzar is another service which offers document conversions. The advantage of Zamzar is its capability to convert not only office documents, but also images, music, archives and videos as well. http://zamzar.com/
- NEW! Thanks to Michael for sharing this resource. TDS Converter offers free conversion of docx to doc. http://converter.tds.lv/
In fact, there are a lot of free online conversion tools available in the net. All you have to do is google your desired keyword for the file you wanted to convert.

It would also be good to suggest to Word 2007 users na kung isesend nila yung file to someone who uses an older version of Office to just save the file in .doc format. Pwede yung gawin, diba? pipili ka lang ng file format pag save mo.

EASY ANSWER: change Office 2008 (Word) to save as .doc instead of docx going fwd. Open blank document, choose “Save As” go to “Options” change settings.

Hey, i don’t know if you ever tried the two sites you placed into your blog but zamzar doesn’t send you any email it’s just to get your email stored into their database and docx2doc ask you to pay for the conversion, so one of them sucks and the other is not free..great information you provide techykid.com.

@HPC: hi HPC. I’ve tried using both services at the time of writing of this article.
the zamzar service sent the file in two or three minutes after i uploaded it. whereas the other service was only referred to me by a friend.

Thank you–I was just about to say the same thing.
A bit more elaborate, but at least it’s free: Get yourself a copy of OpenOffice.org. It allows you to save a docx as doc. Then, you can open the doc in Word.
I am surprised (well, not really) that Microsoft does not offer either a conversion add-on for Word 2003 or an online conversion tool.

Hello Techykid,
Good info. I found out today that http://www.docx2doc.com/ does not offer free docx conversion anymore. I tried to convert a docx file to doc and they ask me for 1.95 US$ (bummer)

Yeah, good call. Send your personal documents to a Latvia, one of the homes of scammers and fraudsters. Just pay the $1.95 at http://www.docx2doc.com and be safe.
