Trying iPad, My First Impressions

May 11th, 2010 No Comments   Posted in Apple, Electronics

When iPad was first announced, I was one of those many people who said, “Oh, they made the iPod bigger”. It was quite disappointing since a lot of us were expecting for something astonishing from Steve Jobs and not some enlarged version of a product from his junk yard.

Anyway, some of these “disappointments” were alleviated after I was able to try the (Mike’s) iPad last Saturday during our shoot for Blog na Pinoy.

Impressions

The iPad gained its popularity because of its size. And true enough, the browsing experience in iPad is way better than any hand-held devices. The size of the screen makes web browsing more exciting. The display is sharp and the multi-touch feature is very responsive. The iPad can also rotate the screen in all four positions.

I don’t like the keyboard though. It’s too big that you can’t type on it the same way you type on an iPod or an iPhone. Also, the iPad is a lot heavier as compared to the Amazon Kindle.

I only get to try the WiFi version of the iPad. This kinda sucks though ‘coz it defeats the purpose of absolute mobility for this kind of device.

The eReader functionality of the iPad is great. The texts are crisp black and sharp and the overall display is clear. The text’s font face and font size can also be changed easily. Flipping through pages is also a breeze and a fun experience.

The battery performance of the iPad is also good. The device was 100% charged when the guys started using it. After around an hour and half of usage (was not used for the entire duration), it only consumed 1% of the original battery life.

All in all, I had a good impression on the iPad despite the short moments I had experienced using it. It may be a good device for reading and browsing but it can never replace the most basic functions of a normal laptop or netbook. The size also makes it inconvenient if you’re really after a mobile device for internet and reading. It’s not also a good substitute for iPod or iPhone. Hence, the iPad may open a new category of its kind.

For many years people try to replace books and convert it into technology. We initially had the ebook readers from Sony, then the popular Amazon Kindle. Now we’re starting to have the Apple iPad.

The first two devices mentioned focus more on the principal function which was for reading. The Apple iPad had more to offer with its applications which was rather similar to the iPhone.

Microsoft wanted to give the user a more tactile experience of an electronic book with the ability to write. So they created the Microsoft Courier. More »

MSI Dual Screen Laptop – the future laptop?

January 12th, 2010 No Comments   Posted in Electronics, Gadgets, Laptops

The Asus Dual Screen Notebook may have been the first one to speak about the concept, but it was the MSI who made the concept a reality.

During the CES 2010 in Las Vegas, the MSI showed off a concept 7-inch mini-laptop and another with two 10-inch screens. The devices both use LCD touch screens, run Microsoft’s Windows 7 OS, is equipped with an Intel Atom Z530 1.6GHz processor and have Intel Menlow microprocessors inside for longer-lasting batteries. These screens can function independently as 2 separate displays as well as a single large display, it could be turned on its side like a book, allowing two-page reading in a more book-like format than single-screen e-readers. Apple iPod Touch 32 GB (3rd Generation)

December 17th, 2009 1 Comment   Posted in Electronics, Gadgets, iPod, review

Apple iPod touchThe third generation of Apple’s iPod Touch is still the king of the hill when it comes to portable, Wi-Fi-wielding media players. It looks identical to the 2nd generation models, but the capacities and prices are improved. There’s no built-in video camera, as had been rumored, which is a bit of a surprise, considering the less-expensive and much-tinier nano got one. With the touch, Apple’s focus remains firmly on music, and, more so than ever, portable gaming.

New additions such as Voice Control, graphics enhancements, improved accessibility, higher capacity, and a faster processor help to refine and already excellent product. The Apple iPod Touch 32gb also ranks the hottest electronic product at Amazon right now, dropping its price by up to $25.01 (8%).

Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 Problems

The eco-friendly 1.5 TB Seagate Barracuda is starting to fail its customers.

The eco-friendly 1 TB Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1TB (ST31000340AS) is starting to fail its customers.

This afternoon, I received an IM from one of my college friends telling me about his awful experience with the Seagate Barracuda 7200.11.

The Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 is a 1.5 TB eco-friendly laptop storage device. It saves 43% of power without compromising drive and system performance, according to Seagate specifications. My friend says otherwise. Just last night, while working on his laptop, his Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 failed him.

According to my friend, after the hard disk failure, he tried rebooting his system but to no avail. His computer was not able to detect the hard drive. He tried fixing the problem using standard trouble shooting methods but it still didn’t work. All of his works, projects and other important files were gone in an instant because he trusted the brand that he thought would never fail him.

August 16th, 2009 4 Comments   Posted in Electronics, Featured Articles, Gadgets

With all the craze of touch screens and multi-touch technology everyone is just waiting to get their hands on these babies. The iTable and the Microsoft Surface.

Let me just give you a little clarification. The iTable is not an Apple product. It is developed by PQ labs and the Microsoft Surface is well.. Microsoft’s. So which is better, the iTable of the Microsoft Surface?

For now we can’t say much about who truly is better but we can give you a brief overview of why these beauties are to die for.

Microsoft SurfaceMicrosoft Surface

Already agreed by most people, this multi-touch computer/table is very useful. You can utilize it for pictures, business, work, study, and more. The beautiful result of the touch is just simply amazing. The whole concept of wireless in this device is giving us a step closer to sci-fi technology similar to what you see in Matrix. One of the highlights of this device is the wireless device file sharing. You put your camera and the pictures just come out and Wham! You share your files with a flick of a wrist. We also have the convenience of shopping just by touching and dropping the credit card over the surface. Convenience at its best. More »

Exploding SE K608i Standard Charger

Sony Ericsson CST-13

I was charging my Sony Ericsson K608i this morning when I heard an explosion from my room. Our circuit breaker immediately tripped after I heard the sound, an indication that there has been a short circuit. I immediately ran into my room only to find out that the cause of the explosion was my K608i’s Standard Charger (CST-13). Thanks to Sony Ericsson’s charger design that the damage did not reach my phone.  My phone is still working as of this time. More »
