A new search engine is coming to our mobile phones soon. A new service developed to cater the Filipino mobile market, AKA.name is a mobile directory of business establishments, individuals, merchants and services. It allows any registered user to use SMS or Web to find other content from the AKA Mobile Directory.

Getting Started

Before a user can start using AKA’s SMS search engine feature, he/she must first register his/her mobile number through AKA’s web site (http://aka.name). After filling out the necessary phones and confirming through mobile phone, a directory entry is automatically created in AKA’s mobile directory for other user’s to search. Users here may be an individual, a merchant or a business establishment.

Searching the contents of AKA Mobile Directory can be done through web or through SMS.  In these busy times, accessing the internet or your desktop computer is very tedious most especially when you are on the go or mobile.  Using AKA’s mobile search feature, locating your favorite pizza bar in your are can be done easily without having the need of logging into a computer. This can be done by sending the following keyword to AKA’s access number. (09229997255)

AKA FIND keywords

e.g AKA FIND pizza makati

Other Features

Aside from the mobile search capability using AKAs mobile search engine, AKA also serves several features which can help us promote our product and connect to our customers.  Upon registering into the sytem, the user receives the opportunity of creating his/her own Micro Site where they user can put his/her product’s description.  When a microsite is udated, all watchers (followers) of that particular micro site will also receive a notification message informing that the site they are following has been updated.  This feature is quite helpful for businessmen and merchants who want to inform they’re consumers of updates of their products.

Assessment

Though the product is still in Beta, AKA promises us an innovative approach in mobile computing and information sharing.  It has the big potential of helping businesses, merchants and individuals promote their product online and offline.

The product’s usability is not that perfect yet as of the moment.  There are still a big room for improving the services they are offering as of the moment.  One disadvantage I see is that the service is not using a standard access number from the mobile operators.  Using 3 or 4-digit access number is easier to remember than an ordinary 11-digit number. I hope our friends from AKA can work on this one.

Also, it would have been better if a user can create multiple directory entries so it would eliminate the need of registering a new acount for every business establishment he/she wants to publish.
